This comment reminded me of another book along these lines. I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59 He talks all about what it was like to join Google early.

Now that I thought of that I'm going through my reading history and think that Steve Jobs might also be interesting to you. There is also Wozniak's book iWoz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It but since I have not read it I can't really comment on it.

[Feeling Lucky] (http://www.amazon.com/Im-Feeling-Lucky-Confessions-Employee/dp/B009F7CVP6)

It's written by the director of marketing who was with Google from early days until they went public. Fascinating read.

In the book I'm Feeling Lucky : The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59, the author does mention that they hired a few people who did search for specific terms on the search engine.

Of course the author wasn't a techie, so he could possibly be mistaken, or it could just be made up, etc. But that's probably where his comment came from.

I'd have to disagree with the others, I'm feeling lucky was super informative and in my opinion the best read.

Source: I want to work for google, trust me I've read a lot of books about them.
