I have this set of packing cubes from Amazon (and I see a similar set that now comes with a shoe bag too) and while not the exact model, a Jackery portable charger similar to this one that I always bring when I travel and inevitably end up lending to someone to charge their phone.

And I haven't travelled with it yet, but I just bought this crossbody purse to bring on my next trip and the quality is very good on first glance (will have to see how it holds up), I can fit my iPhone 8 Plus in it easily and there's card slots built in to keep things neat.

get a jackery charger on amazon. i own 3 different sizes. all incredible build quality at affordable prices. the "jackery bar" is probably a good bet for a day's worth of use, the "giant" will get you 2-3 days depending on how many charges you need a day. You can get a Bar for $15, giant for $20, just grabbed one for the girlfriend for her bday. i recommend it to all of my friends and all of ours are still running fine, oldest is 2.5 years old. I originally bought the giant when it was $40 so its pretty cool to see it so low in price now.

I'd recommend turning on Airplane Mode. This disables wi-fi hunting and should help battery life a bit. Also, I've never tried this but apparently you can connect an external battery bank like these to the USB connection on the side of the camera. This will bypass the battery in the camera and use its power first when the camera is turned on.

They hardly work, just get a power bar like this http://www.amazon.com/Jackery-Fast-charging-Aluminum-Portable-Capacity/dp/B00DTXA578/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396564353&sr=8-1&keywords=charging+bar
and charge it when you go into town.

There are better ones out there but shopping is different for me because i'm in canada

Landscape photographer checking in. My Garmin crapped out last spring and I did a lot of poking around and weighing out options. I settled on using my smart phone with Gaia GPS as noted by others here. I already had a pretty descent Otterbox case, so I didn't bother with upgrading that, but you can get some pretty heavy duty cases if you are worried about protection. I also picked up a portable external battery pack. The interface and features on Gaia are way better than anything from Garmin or Delorme. You set it to airplane mode when you leave range which allows for much better battery life. You can set it to track your every move, or if you want to conserve further you can forego the tracking and just have your current position displayed. A couple quick taps to save a way point. I did a 3 day trip this summer in the Weminuche Wilderness of Colorado with no troubles and didn't even tap into my battery pack.

My phone easily lasts ~3 hrs. For longer rides I have a small 1"x3" lithium ion battery I keep on my jersey back pocket, a normal iPhone cable is long enough to connect it from there to my quad lock like phone attachment.

Edit: here is the battery I bought back in 2015 and still works great
