I picked up one of those and a better stand (similar to this, though I had to jury rig it to fit, so there may be better solutions). It's a decent setup, and while a little touchy to use, it's a bit better being able to put things up on a big monitor to view.
Plus the images it can capture are not terrible.

I am not sure if it will give me the extra height I will need, but your idea of simply raising the scope higher by placing books underneath the stand should work just fine. I am excited to try out this new setup next weekend.
