So after doing some research, most external HDD's (as long as they have a usb 3.0 or 2.0 interface) should work. I didn't do a lot of digging, but below is an external hard drive which should work.

If price is less of an issue, I have some clients who love their LaCie external drives. These are rugged and can take a great deal of abuse.

If you would like a cheaper option and have an old hard drive then you'd want to search for a usb 2.0 external hard drive enclosure. You'd need to make sure the enclosure will support the type of drive you have (PATA/SATA etc) then just install the hard drive in the enclosure, set up the enclosure, plug in to usb, plug in to power and off you go.
I have used a LaCie 2TB external drive on my Mac since my days in university (well over 3 years ago) Also bought it second hand from a Computer Exchange store and it has not failed me yet, I used it frequently to edit videos and pictures from. Do not use it daily but still plug it in a few times a week to either back up or look for all stored items.
