Its not so much that you need music theory to play a harmonica. But you need to know music theory to select the right harmonica for a particular purpose. (IE: the difference between a Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor in G vs a diatonic C).

Here's the music theory to get you started:

  • There are three (common) positions of the Harmonica. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 1st position is playing the Harmonica like it was designed. 2nd position (aka: Cross Harp) is playing Blues with the Harmonica, its weird and requires "bends" and stuff. I don't know what 3rd position means yet :-(

  • Since 1st position is much much easier to learn, look for songs that are in the key of your harmonica. You got a C harmonica, so look for songs in the key of C.

    > How do you suggest I should start

    Play scales.

    Scales up: 4 (4) 5 (5) 6 (6) (7) 7
    Scales down: 7 (7) (6) 6 (5) 5 (4) 4

Do this until you understand the music theory. Eight notes up, eight notes down. 1st position is all about this classic scale. Don't worry about advanced stuff like bends or 2nd position play or blues yet. Stick with children songs and other simple songs in 1st position till you're comfortable with breathing.

    Some songs you can play:

  • Mary had a little lamb
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
  • Kumbaya

    ------------

Eventually, you'll want to learn how to read music and other music theory stuff. But that's no fun! Stick with "Harmonica tabs" while you're a beginner, and play simple songs until you're comfortable. Once you build up some confidence, pick out a more theoretically complete book and learn to read standard-sheet music. Then start playing whatever songs you can find. There's a lot more songs out there in standard notation.
