To be honest, take the lessons first. There is a lot of physics and things to be aware of when riding, including countersteering and emergency handling and braking response that it's hard to explain via the internet. Without proper training you really limit what you are able to do and really increase the likelihood of really trashing the bike, and even worse - yourself. And if you pick up bad habits at the start, it could take you forever to get out of them (lord knows I still have a few I am working on).

Riding itself is not as dangerous as some will make it out to be, but without knowing what you are doing you are increasing that risk a thousandfold. Even with all the proper gear, it's not hard to get hurt in the worst situations and that's for people who have years and years under their belt.

Don't live the "Ride Hard, Die Young", go for "Ride Smart, Die Old".

That said, I am not your parent so if you choose to ride before you get the right lessons, a few helpful things are:

A good video all about motorcycles and how they work

A good book all about motorcycles. It's very beginner friendly and talks a lot about the very basics of everything. It's a good starting spot.

Be safe out there, wear your gear as well.

Good tips in comments. MSF ridercourse should make you a confident rider, and the book "lets ride" by sonny barger should be a must read for any new, or seasoned rider. I read it every year. http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Ride-Sonny-Bargers-Motorcycling/dp/0061964271

I've read most of the books that are likely to come up in this thread. Let's Ride, by Sonny Barger, was my favorite. He discusses everything from gear (where he encourages ATGATT, but doesn't preach), choosing the right bike, what to look for in a used bike, weather and other inclement conditions, and basic/routine maintenance. His attitude during the entire book just made me want to drop whatever I was doing and hop on the nearest two-wheeled conveyance and tear off into the sunset.

And hey, it's worth reading just to hear one of the founders of the Hells Angels rag on how Harley-Davidson is way behind the times.
