I just gutted my dock and popped it in a portable shell from Amazon. It's great. The Skull & Co. Grip case fit in the official dock but you had to push it down a pinch to ensure it docked properly. It fits better in the modded one.

Feel much better gutting a dock if i have a backup already. Would hate to have to drop $70-90 just to get another dock if i screwed something up.

I don’t have too much knowledge on cases or chargers, but for a portable dock I would go with something like this. It’s just a case for the original dock internals, so you don’t run the risk of bricking your Switch.

I went with the LinkStyle dock shell. Unlike BASSTOP, LinkStyle has a spot for the power LED and spring-loaded USB-C cover.

I personally bought this dock.. It fits the gripcase perfectly but I don't particularly like it, feels like I might break the switch everytime I dock it? It has the same innards as the switch though, you have to take apart a dock

Just buy a shell for the dock and transfer the internals of the original dock into the shell. Way smaller and doesn't mess up the screen. The one I bought is linked below.

The LinkStyle dock replacement shell works beautifully with the Skull & Co. GripCase. Almost like it was made for it. Additionally it utilizes the indicator light from the original dock as well as the spring mechanism for the USB-C port. I love them both a lot. That’s the only one I can personally speak to.

Unfortunately so, the only way around this to guarantee being 100% safe, as discussed in other posts is to buy a shell like the one linked below, and replace the internals from the OEM dock that comes with the switch.

Take the reviews with a grain of salt since most of the negative reviews are by people who thought they were getting a fully functional dock rather than just an empty DIY dock case. Some of these negative reviews are so poorly worded that I wonder whether they were written by one of the many competitor DIY dock sellers.

Anyway, I chose this dock case because it had a bit more ventilation than the Basstorp model and this one also retains the Switch dock's spring mounting plate rather than just a flat USB-C adapter surface. Like several other DIY docks, this one comes with the mini-screwdrivers and screws you will need for the conversion. I'm not very tech-savvy when it comes to DIY computer stuff, but I was able to do this conversion without any problems within 20-30min (of super super paranoid careful work). Someone with more confidence could easily do it in 10-15min.

The DIY dock cases are currently the only 100% safe travel dock solution since their electronics are 100% Nintendo-made. I've heard good things about the Insignia dock from Best Buy, but it is still bigger than this DIY type of dock. This one could fit in your pocket.

Best dock enclosure if you still don't want third party. Works with the grip case as well.

There are, this one you have to use the circuit board on your original dock and slap it in there.

Keep in mind, actually losing your save files can be more devastating than just not having a switch for a few weeks while it's sent in for repairs. Is that something really worth risking?

Literally all you have to do is unscrew the official dock, take out the board, and putting it into the smaller shell. No soldering, no electrical skill required.

It works amazing. And it much smaller and lighter than your OG dock

I would be careful of third party stuff because the power delivery problem still exists. A thing you can do is look for a mini-dock shell that you can put the contents of an official dock inside. (You take apart the official dock and put its 'insides' in a different, smaller, case. Like this one.)
