There is nothing wrong with the ATH M50s and honestly a lot of people hate it because frankly its "cool" to hate on popular trends.

But if I were to suggest an alternative to the ATH M50s, I would say look into Logitech UE 6000s. Just to note that this line of headphones have been officially discontinued. But that just means you get a heck of a deal.

The cool thing about this headphone is the active noise cancellation feature. You basically get two headphones in one. The active mode has a more dynamic and fun sound profile (boosted Bass, Treble and mids). But in passive mode this headphone is quite neutral with a slight bass prominence in the sub bass segment.

This thing rocks out to everything from Jazz to rock. And when you need to take things up a notch just flick the switch ;) The sound stage is wide and instrument separation is great. It doesn't need a dac/amp to drive it but it would definitely help in terms of getting a better sound listening experience. I don't really have a dedicated DAC, I am using my old Line 6 GX USB guitar recording USB interface. I kind of figured out randomly that it can be used as a standalone dac. I am planning to pick up a decent amp/dac in the future though.

The UE 6000s also folds up into a compact package and comes with a carrying case. I carry it in my backpack when I travel so it can take a beating. Unlike Beats Studios, this headphone works in passive mode even if batteries run out (needs two AAAs). I sometimes use the ANC feature when I study in the library as it drones out the sounds in the background. It is no Bose QC15 but at this price it is steal :)

And just a final point about this headphone: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/surprisingly-good-logitec-ue6000-and-ue9000
Tyll over at innerfidelity has a great review on the phone, you should check it out!

Some other suggestions:

  • V Moda XS (on ear headphone) - very balanced pair of headphones and easy to drive and it's easy on the eyes too

  • JVC Xtreme Xplosives HA FR201 (IEM) - my current IEM - this IEM + Comply or Monster Supertips = HEAVEN (don't let the name fool you, this thing is a hidden gem. you have to hear it to believe it!). Best bang for the buck PERIOD

  • Shure SE 215 (IEM) - detachable cables and only 99 bucks. It has a negative profile so you can even sleep wearing these headphones. Pretty comfortable when it comes extended wearing sessions. I would suggest getting better fitting tips if the stocks don't cut it. Getting a tight seal is paramount to getting the best experience

I am not really an audiophile and neutrality is not my main criteria when comparing headphones, but for an all purpose headphone you can't go wrong with any of those. However they wouldn't be as useful for mastering tracks as compared to ATH M50. Sorry for the long post, hope it helped you a bit.

Always remember that when it comes to headphones a lot of it is subjective and what is bad for someone might be great for you. So try and test out headphones if you can. With that said, happy listening!

I hear you, it's definitely getting harder and harder. What's your budget and requirements like tho? There's definitely a plethora of good choices to pick from.

My pick for budget earphones is the XiaoMi Piston 2, which i picked up for less than 15 dollars.

For a proper headphone, I've used the Logitech UE 6000 for a long time and they are really lovely to listen to. Unfortunately, durability is poor and the leather/PU style cups usually disintegrate after a while. And it's discontinued unfortunately.

My current wishlist includes the Sony MDR 1A, which sounds absolutely fantastic with the on board DAC. A must-get if you have the budget for it.

And on the wireless side of things, the Bose QC35 is great for mobility, without sacrificing quality like most wireless headsets do. This one is expensive, but for good reason of course since the unit I tried blocked off external noise extremely well to create an immersive listening experience.

Hope this helps you in some ways at least!

Budget: $100 - $150 (slightly flexible)

Source: Desktop, Nexus 6P occasionally

Requirements for isolation: I don't require a ton, but I do sit in close proximity to others at work where I will use them most, so little to no bleed would be best.

Will you be using the headphones in public?: Not often.

Preferred type of headphone: Over-ear

Preferred tonal balance: Mostly neutral with slightly more bass

Past headphones: Logitech 982-000079 UE 6000 (I really enjoyed the tonal balance on these as well as the fit around the ears.)

Preferred Music: Various electronic genres, as well as indie pop/rock. Occasionally some metal.

Improvements on current set-up: Eventually I'd like to add a DAC to my set-up so something that have noticeable improvements with a DAC added would be awesome :)

u/QuipA · 2 pointsr/headphones

> Overall balanced, but still with emphasis on bass

You can't have both. There are headphones like the AKG K553 PRO which only feature a little extra warmth. But they cannot be considered bassy.

All headphones you mentioned are bassy, not neutral. My recommendation for you would be the UE6000. Just ignore the ANC feature (it sucks) and makes the headphone unbalanced and heavy.

my logitech headphones went bust this week and i was looking for a similar set of headphones for a similar price, something that will last a few years

Budget: 100-200 dosh

Preferred type: over ear.

Tone balance: overall balanced would be good.

Music: rap and electronic

I will not be using these in public and decent isolation would be good because i live near a small airport.

Exactly... these mop the floor with the M50s for less, and yes I've owned both. Just imo of course.

u/panda_prosecuter · 1 pointr/headphones

I have the UE 6000s and as long as you're running them in passive mode (as opposed to the NC mode) they're phenomenal. Very flat EQ. I prefered them comfort wise to the M50s & M-100s and they're far more portable than the Custom One Pros.

u/hofnbricl · 1 pointr/androidaudio

Interesting, I'll check them out, how's the noise cancellation work? Are they comfortable? I'm looking at these

u/gundabunny · 1 pointr/headphones

I have had a look around and I have found 2 pairs that I am leaning towards getting:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-L1-28-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B006RUIWC0

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-982-000079-6000-Headphones-Discontinued/dp/B0094S36RI

The L1's base price is so much higher, so is it worth getting them? I'm guessing they are a better quality pair of headphones for my price range (<150$) than the UE 6000's.

Need some help picking as there was not much information on the L1's on this subreddit. Any pros or cons about the two?

Will mostly be using this in my car and just at home.

Sorry if this is worded or set out terribly in a bit of a rush, any input will be helpful.

Thanks!

u/Mistapwnz · 1 pointr/headphones

The UE6000 is good for its price.

Looking for a good pair of headphones for listening to music from my laptop and gaming.

Budget: Sub $100

Source: My laptop (I use it as a desktop so I do not need these headphones to be portable)

Type of Headphone: Closed Headphones

Preferred Tonal Balance: I'm sorry but, I am very new to this so I can't answer this properly. Bass maybe?

Past Headphones: JVC IEMS. I still have them and will continue to use them for portable use.

Preferred Music: Electronic( Nightcore, Nightstep, Dubstep, House, Trap, Glitch Hop, etc.) Classic Rock.

Location: USA

Headphones I am looking at right now: Right now I have had Logitech UE 6000s recommended for me and Sony MDR10Rs and I think both suit what I am looking for and want to know your opinions.

Side Note:I have a large Bose store in a mall nearby so, if you guys have any recommendations from Bose that would fit my needs that'd be awesome.

Thanks!

u/TenchiZero · 1 pointr/headphones

Logitech UE6000 is in your budget and has active noise canceling so long as you have some batteries thrown in.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/videos

Here's another. I have this pair, and for $80, its the best deal on the headphone market. Solid build quality, good sound, very comfortable. They used to be sold for around $200 as a better sounding beats competitor, so they don't look dorky. Also has a noise canceling feature.

u/Kuriousmax · 1 pointr/headphones

The Logitech UE6000 got a good review on innerfidelity. They're $194 right now so they work with your budget. They also have active noise-canceling for when you want to use it, but sound quality will decrease with it on.

That will get you started for now. That mic has been recommended left and right everywhere. Those headphones are awesome as well. I gave a pair to my dad and in the middle of moving states, I stayed at my parent's house and I took em every night when playing CSGO and loved em. I currently use a pair of UE6000 and they are nice but they eat batteries like crazy.

u/b0yd07 · 0 pointsr/hardwareswap

I have these. Have used them for prolly less than an hour, tbh. Would ask for $60 shipped. Still have the box and everything.
