I've integrated more of your method into mine today, and it seems to be working very well.

I started with a five minute stir with a mortar and pestle (which might or might not actually be necessary), followed by a shake, strain and squeeze, then a second shake and squeeze. After the second shake, the grounds squeezed easily and seem gritty and dry afterwards. I think we're getting a very efficient separation here.

I want to reiterate a caution I mentioned below - I use 'hot' tap water, and if you shake a jar that's half full of hot water (even tap-water hot) you will get a surprisingly forceful expansion of the trapped air.

I've mitigated this by doing my shaking in a quart mason jar, capped with a soft silicon lid like this:

The silicon gives a better seal, but also deforms under pressure, so you can tell what's going on inside the jar. I add my hot water, cap it, give it one gentle shake, and the lid is already bulging. A quick twist to release the pressure, and do it again until the bulging stops. Safe and easy. It would work just fine with a regular lid too, just listen for the hiss of the escaping air.
