I used to feel the same way about people talking about various all day formulas (aka they must be aliens who don't eat or drink) until I tried the SSMI. I did find the SSMI has a couple of tricks:

2 once the lipstick is on, respect the dry down period: try not to press lips together or eat/drink for 10 to 20 minutes or so. If I press my lips together it's much more likely to get clumpy and flake. I usually put it on after I've eaten and had coffee โ
3 counterintuitive but apply sparingly! I usually do one thin coat + a little edge touch up. Like I will wipe the applicator again the inner lip of the tube so not too much gets on the doe foot at once. The heavier the coat/multiple layers = more clumps and flakes.
It may just not be the right formula for you but that might help troubleshoot! Good luck ๐๐๐
