OP, here's the vegan D3 I buy.

Bonus vegan omega-3.

Edit: to answer your discussion question, my line is my health. By law, at least in the United States, all medicine and medical procedures must be tested on animals. Also, most prescriptions meds contain animal products already (gelatin, lactose, shellac, etc). It sucks, but we have to live in the confines of reality. I am vegan as far as is practicable and possible, after all.

I have a Vitamin D deficiency and I live in Ohio, I have been reading up the same as you, my deficiency was dangerously low like 7 (25 ish is normal, my doctor says he likes to see around 50). I am at high risk as it is for osteoporosis (petite, small frame, grandmother had severe osteoporosis) so this wasn't something I am willing to second guess. Your health is important, and the foods I named are fortified/supplemented just as the vitamins we take (save mushrooms/sunlight).

Mushrooms, fortified cereals, tofu+ (by Nasoya) and plant-based milks are fortified, but everything I've read said it's super hard to get it just through foods if you are deficient. Sun is our best bet, however, Ohio doesn't get much particularly in the upcoming months, it's particularly bad for those of us working primarily indoors.

My doctor prescribed me an Rx of 50,000 units, I checked with every pharmacy around here and could not find a vegan version, but I did find this: https://smile.amazon.com/MRM-Vitamin-Calcium-Health-5000IU/dp/B00CYA8HMW/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1509800276&sr=8-5&keywords=vegan+vitamin+d

I have since been tested again, and am in the completely normal range. I know that you don't want to supplement, but Vitamin D is very important for bone and cognitive health: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-vitamin-d/art-20363792

Think of it like B-12, I don't supplement a lot, I take Deva multivitamin (which clearly wasn't enough to stop a deficiency), B-12 and Vitamin D. It's not a vegan deficiency as much as where you live, and how much time you spend outdoors.

I use these: MRM - Vegan Vitamin D3, Meets Calcium & Bone Health Needs, Vegan & Vegetarian Approved (5000IU 60 Count) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CYA8HMW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t9nyCb0CQNYQP

They’re about $10ish through Amazon. I’ve found vegan vitamin D through the vitamin shoppe, but they’re way more expensive.

Not Norwegian, but I was also worried about vitamin D3 and not getting enough sun. I use this brand of supplements!

I am not a doctor, and am not advocating a particular vitamin brand. What I do use is this supplement and have found it to be pretty powerful. Being a vegetarian, I get the vegetarian capsules. This one is also good if you have allergies to peanuts, dairy or shellfish.

If you've gone to the dr recently, they may be able to advise you on the appropriate strength of vitamin D to take to meet your specific needs. I know from routine physicals that I'm vitamin D deficient anyway, and take a bit more than the average person might as a result.

I like to take the Vitamin D in the am. For me, it impacts my wakefulness during the day positively and my ability to sleep at night negatively if taken too late in the day.

Finally, no matter what supplement you ultimately choose, check out the quality of it before you buy. There are websites like Labdoor that rank vitamins based on quality. There is a huge problem with how unregulated (in the US) vitamin supplements are and many supplements don't contain what they say they do on the bottle. There are other vitamin quality comparison websites, google for those and look at a few to feel comfortable with what you are getting.

Good luck!

I get a 5000 IU D3 from amazon. It's cholecalciferol, not lanolin. $10 for 60 count.

> There’s no vegan D3 supplements, D2 is unusable

I don't think it's true that D2 is useless. However, there are vegan D3 supplements. Here are two examples on Amazon you could buy right now if you wanted to:

There is now vegan d-3. I get mine from Juice Press, which is a chain in the NYC area, but MRM sells one on amazon.
