Sorry... nobody has 2 grand to spend on a macbook that really should cost only 1 grand but they charge an extra grand cause its white and says 'apple' on it.

Edit: All these downvotes from ignorant people. Here I will prove it to you that you spend hundreds of dollars more on a macbook than you do on other laptops simply because it has the apple logo on it and for no other reason. In fact the macbooks even have very noticeably worse specs. It is an undeniable ripoff.

Comparison 1: Macbook Pro(s) VS Lenovo - respectable brand which are known for duability and once known for some of the best laptop keyboards if not the best on the entire market(not so much in this department anymore). Same price as the Macbook Pro(s) but triple the specs and even a 6 inch advantage(almost 50% larger) advantage on the screen size.

Comparison 2: Macbook Pro(s) VS MSI - This one is only 899 so almost $300 cheaper than the Macbooks and again has way better specs, and again an almost 7 inch advantage on screen size.

Comparison 3: Macbook Pro(s) VS Acer - this one is only 700 and again has way better specs than any of the macbook pros.

And this is only comparing the mid range of the Macbooks. After Macbook Pros the price jumps from 2 - 4 grand and the specs are STILL worse than anything you can buy on the market for that price. Apple products are overpriced and ripoffs, only apple zombies don't realize this.

Maybe a super fast foreword like in spacechem? Would be nice if your factory isn't efficient so you dont have to sit through it. But then again that might be hard to get not lag on some pcs. I know my laptop lags when I speed it up at the current fast-foreword speed.
laptop that I am using:

So you're looking at an MSI GP70 and an MSI GE70?

They are both bad, honestly. Poor quality products that are really flimsy and run quite hot. I would stay away from anything below the GT or GS series MSI laptops.

Also, for school, don't go with a 17.3" laptop. They are huge and can be a bitch to take around and get through classes with. They occupy a lot of space. I'd suggest going with the Lenovo Y50 if you want to get the performance of the 2nd laptop for the price of the first one, all while being much higher quality in every way and being WAY more portable.

Now I'm pretty settled on the MSI GP70: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IQ4G8U8/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944579862&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00IQ4E0ZI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0BKZ1TTQZHQ1787D9J0F

What do you guys think of that machine?

EDIT: My only concern with this machine is that it might be overkill; in fact, I'm pretty sure it is. Might there be any cheaper or equally-priced alternatives with a weaker GPU but better build quality? Maybe aluminum or something?

Well depending on conversion rates. I'd look for a laptop running a Core i5 - 4gb+ RAM - ideally from Lenovo, Dell, Asus.
Something along the lines of these 2 laptops :http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CRXZUG2/ref=pd_aw_sbs_8?pi=SS115&simLd=1

<br> on the off chance I got the conversion wrong
Here's a halfway decent gaming laptop. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IQ4G8U8/ref=pd_aw_sbs_3?pi=SS115&simLd=1

I'd suggest this. It would be a great choice; it has a powerful dual-core i5 and a dedicated 840m.

No, you can lower your budget.
I'm looking as well and my nerdy buddy found me this laptop perfectly in my budget.

MSI makes a nice range of gaming laptops in that price range. If you scroll down a bit in the link there are a few options from $800-1200 that are pretty good.
