Not only can it, with USB3 it's actually a totally viable option. I just got myself one of these:

Right now I'm just using it for backup, but I'm considering making it my primary hard drive. That way, instead of carrying a laptop around with me, I can just carry this drive around in my shirt pocket and boot up on any pretty much any Mac in the world.

Here's the summary:

Ignore the things that are obviously mac specific (boot camp). I used VirtualBox to do the Windows specific parts mentioned (formatting and deploying) so you can do the same if needed. I had a hard time getting it to work and had to dig deep through a rabbit hole of posts: but once I got it working, it's been solid for two years.

The general idea is:

  • Format/ Partition your external device a specific way, with certain flags set
  • Deploy the Windows image to the drive using a special tool common in enterprise world.

    I had a hard time sourcing all of the right stuff and a lot of "wait for 30 minutes only to see it fail in the end." But eventually I got it working and it hasn't failed catastrophically yet.

    Caveats:

  • You can absolutely plug it in to any system and boot from USB with the new hardware-- Windows 10 does a great job at resolving drivers. I set it up on my mac, but plugged he into a friends ganing PC and had he most tremendous Skyrim experience to date. Unfortunately if you do that- you will lose activation. So don't do this after you have activated.

  • obviously, don't unplug your USB cable and make sure it's a solid cable before booting. My cable went bad and similar to a shorted audio cable, my drive was not able to stay solidly connected. This is REALLY bad when it's your full OS drive. I had to do recovery stuff, all because my cable went shoddy and I didn't notice.

    Other than those two points, it works far better than I would have expected, and has been my main way to use Windows as needed at home for gaming.

I have a cool credit card shaped one so it's an odd size so I'm less likely to lose it. I just got the smallest but it goes all the way up to a 1 TB

As soon as the technology is cheap enough I want to get one with external encryption, either fingerprint or passcode.

None that I'm aware of, but USB3 SSDs are pretty fast. I've had one of these for quite a while and it makes a decent emergency boot drive. One of my former coworkers has one of these in addition to the one I have and said it's even faster.

FYI, fast external drives can give you a huge boost in game load times over the internal drive, so it might be worth investing in some good quality hardware.

You can look up some performance metrics on various combinations/models, but one guy halved his load times by putting two WD Red Pro HDD's in RAID0, and you can shave off 30-50% on load times with various SSD's.

You know what this is the curse of modern tech. We no longer suffer from the slow speeds of physical hard drives but we have paid a steep price for it with storage. I too have an MBA with 128, and it's no where near close enough. I have to keep both my music and my photos on a portable hdd. Said portable hhd is very slow even though it's usb 3. Apple wants a princely sum for their 1tb ssd and they only put it in the mbp 15"
