I have an answer to this, but it's solved with money (and a bit of time). Almost all of the Arris modem/router combos are just trash... and there's nothing that can be done about it that I could determine. I just decided to buy my own equipment and my Internet hasn't had any problems since. No slowdowns, and no downtime. Here's what I got, but note that this equipment is actually super overkill and I think cheaper equipment could still do the job:

I actually did buy the router used so that saved a bit of money. Your ISP will need to support the what modem you get, but Northland (which I assume you use) supports a good bit of modems, you just need to call them and give them your CMAC on the modem to activate it on their network. So CCIT does bring up a good point on the WIFI space being crouded. The router I bought performs extremely well in crowded environments, which was what was needed in my scenario. The modem was bought because it supports gigabit speeds.

I was having constant disconnects from launch until about a month ago. Then I bought a newer modem and router.

Do you need it to have onboard router functions, or would a straight modem work?

If just plain modem, something like a Netgear CM700 would work or any other modem that has at least 24 downstream channels.. if you want some room for growth, otherwise a 16 channel modem like the SB6183 would do.

and if you really want to future proof if you ever decide to go with the standard gigabit service, look into a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, such as a Motorola MB8600.

I use this netgear modem and this netgear router with 60mbps internet from Comcast. It is a bit pricey for the pair, but it is future proof in that it is docsis 3.1 so it is capable of gigabit. This pair has been great for me, and even though I only pay for 60 mbps, I never have issues with sputtering or buffering when streaming and never have issues on xbox live.
I would assume this netgear docsis 3.0 modem would also be reliable as well, and it is much cheaper. I've read on here about a defect in some docsis 3.0 modems that could cause latency spikes which could affect gaming so I would look into that if I were you and come to your own conclusion on that.

We've had a Nighthawk (one with 4 antenna, not 3) for a couple years and its been great. Covered a large house much bettee than our old one. This is just the router, which broadcasts the wifi, you still need a modem which I guess acts as a translator between the router and the provider's service.

Can't say I know much about it, but I've heard that "Docsis 3.1" distinction is important. Maybe someone else knows more.


If you've been renting from Comcast you likely have a Modem/Router combo thats costing you around $100/year to rent, so still I'd recommend you switch!

It maybe that the comcast modem in bridge mode is giving out a 192.168.1.1/24 address and the UDM pro also has the default address of 192.168.1.1/24. You will need to change one device to a different network. You could use the blue tooth app to change the UDM pro to 192.168.2.1/24 and that should fix it. Also to get around the comcast bridge mode issue you can get our own modem and that is the best way to get the internet address to the WAN. As others have said, there's no such thing as BIFL electronics. If their protocols aren't uselessly outdated, they would be underpowered for demands that have increased year after year.

Might you post what you're using now? Having to reset a router is not uncommon as it's not the most high end hardware in those things. You might just have a crappy router.

If you're future proofing I'd suggest a DOCSIS 3.1 compliant modem. And then get whatever wifi router your devices support. N, AC, are you an early adopter of AX, goodness forbid you're still on G.

Correct. This for example is one Comcast approved Gigabit modem

A refurbished Arris 6141 would be more than enough ($29.99) and last I checked was Comcast certified compatible too.

Then whatever TP Link / Netgear / Asus router your budget allows for after. Archer C7/C9 and Netgear 6700 are decent choices albeit slightly pushing it.

Just a tip for the future. When you search "Gigabit modem" in the future you are fine and should get modems that are capable of supporting minimum 1Gb/s speed. However be wary of searching Gigabit router. Most choices you'll get are routers with Gigabit Ethernet ports and can't actually do WAN->LAN of Gigabit.

I’ve been using the ASUS RT-AC68U over the last year. I have it centrally located on the 1st floor. It provides excellent coverage to my basement and 2nd floor.

Note, you’ll need to pair this with a cable modem as it is not a modem-router combo. I pair mine with the NETGEAR CM1000.
