Amazon Prime has this Netgear Nighthawk USB Wireless AC1900 adapter with 1,700 reviews, mostly positive. Prime has an overnight option for a few extra bucks too. Can’t go wrong with anything Nighthawk. Your username makes it appear you’re in the UK though. If so here’s the UK link. Hope this helps!

I had this highly rated usb wifi adapter. It died after 3 months and was spotty the whole time. https://www.linksys.com/us/p/P-AE2500/
I got frustrated and bought this. https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-Nighthawk-AC1900-Adapter-A7000-10000S/dp/B073JHHNJ9/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523283534&sr=8-3&keywords=nighthawk+usb
Works great.

Careful before you buy, and make sure it has native features to support building an Access-Point WiFi. Some Adapters/Network cards don't, and can suffer from using software -based Access-Point Solutions.

Such as the AC1900 Adapter. No Native Support with Windows 10.

You would either need a powerline adapter to use a wired connection, a PCI express wifi card for wireless, or a USB wifi card for wireless. If you can't run a cable from your desktop to your router then I'd generally suggest a powerline adapter, and if you can't do that I like an internal wifi card (the PCI express card), but USB does give you more options for placement (especially since you can buy an extension cable and easily change the port it's in and move it between devices.)
