I had a similar budget and looked at the Nikon D3000, D5000 and D90. Then the D3100 came out, so I compared that too.

Essentially it came down to:

  • D3100 has the most megapixels, but not a great sensor
  • D90 has a great sensor and does 720p video (in 5 minute bursts)
  • D5000 has a pretty great sensor and also does 720p video (in 5 minute bursts)

    Also:

  • D90 and D5000 have bracketing (great for HDR)
  • D90 does 4.5fps, D5000 does 4fps
  • D5000 has rotating LCD (nice, I use it more than I thought)
  • D5000 is smaller, but lacks an LCD on top
  • D90 supports auto-focus on AF and AF-S lenses, D5000 only supports AF-S

Essentially, the D90 and the D5000 have very little between them for image capture, but the D5000 does video and is still about $300 cheaper.

Digital Photography Review is a great site for comparisons, especially the the side by side view (check "Show All Cameras" to compare older models like the D90) — it even highlights the winning model for each criteria.

I grabbed the D5000 and later the Tamron 70-300mm lens for less than $150 — it's a great piece of glass for the price.

You can see examples of my photos since I got my D5000 in August on flickr — all taken with the kit lens (18-55mm) and the Tamron.

Edit: I was coming from a used D40, to give this some context.

Edit 2: Corrected D90 video statement

    Edit 3: Note about lenses & auto-focusing

I have a Nikon D3300, and was looking for a somewhat cheap lens for trying to get a shot of the upcoming eclipse. I found the following and was wondering if it'd be enough. I think 300mm might be cutting it close, but anything I've looked for above that is really outside my current price range. Any suggestions? Thank you

It depends a lot on what you'll be shooting of course.

i'd probably bring a big zoom and a 35mm prime lens, because it will end up being about 50mm with your D3500's 1.5x crop.

can't beat either for the price.

I often bring the so-so kit lens on hiking trips as well, since it's frankly pretty durable and essentially disposible, very replaceable. I wouldn't mind if i broke it.
