I would ditch the GoPro. Now hear me out before the downvote. I love my GoPro, both of them. They are great for attaching to a bike, suction cupping to the side of a racecar, etc. With those extreme uses out of the way, in my opinion, it's a horrible camera. Changing modes is a pain, and knowing which camera mode will work best is a guess. For pictures, you can't even be sure you're lined up with what you want without the LCD or cell phone app. You can't review what you just recorded or took a picture of, so you're left hoping for the best. All this, and battery life sort of sucks.

For sub $300, you can pick up a waterproof point and shoot that, for example has 15mp, HD videos, built in wifi to transfer photos, a LCD display, 5x zoom, etc: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Waterproof-Digital-Camera/dp/B00B7N997O

...but again, it's all in what you are happy with. I've seen several videos of people who recorded their whole vacation with a GoPro and they came out awesome. I'm just saying that myself, for the easy of using a decide, I would never depend on a GoPro.

Nikon AW110. The picture quality isn't earthshattering, but it's very solid for a point and shoot. The great thing is I've taken it snowboarding, snorkeling, backpacking, etc.

It can probably take as much abuse as you can, so you can take it on any adventure. And it'll snap (arguably) the best pictures of any adventure camera.

I have an AW100 Link is the new model.

It a great camera for outdoors. I kayak with it and it takes bumps and falls well. Pictures are pretty good for a point and shoot.

I think the Olympus I got my mom is much better though Olympus 820 I bought her that because he likes to drop things and let the kids play with the camera. I know it can take the abuse and the picture quality is better than my AW100.
