Matthew Wood's Earthwise Herbal (Volume 1 and 2) are good reads. The first volume covers old world plants only; the second one is for new world plants. He uses traditional terminology and descriptions for the herbs as well, (Planetary associations, elemental associations, and the traditional properties; wet, hot, cold, dry).

Culpeper's herbal is a the quintessential traditional European herbal, and there's plenty of free copies floating around online; I believe Henriette's herbal page has a copy? Or a copy of King's American dispensory. Not sure.

If you get into Scandinavian/Norse/Northern herbalism, you will find a lot of "ye olde-magick" charms and "spells" with it; that's just part of the traditions. I found this book a while ago for someone who was asking about traditional northern herbalism, if you're interested. I haven't read it, but you might find it helpful if you decide to get it.

EDIT: Forgot the name of Matthew Wood's book, fixed it
