Not your fault. A lot of countries just don't teach it the way it should be taught. The important thing is now you know and you can go forth and learn even more. There are some great documentaries on it (a few are listed here: https://library.csi.cuny.edu/c.php?g=571360&p=3995885) I especially enjoy the Ken Burns one (which is included with Amazon prime here: Its episode one of the "Ken Burns: American Lives" series, which is an amazing series. And "iron jawed angels" sure made an impression on me when I was younger.

Interesting note - watched Ken Burns' 2-part story on Susan B Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton (women's rights movement, especially right to vote) a couple months back. It's not much, but there is a couple small comments about prohibition. Yes, there were some with puritanical views on prohibition; but there were other women who supported prohibition because so many husbands would drink the grocery money and come home abusive (or not come home at all). This was a very enlightening view of prohibition, and like you, I also had a major change of opinion.
