Almost got scammed today.

There's an online marketplace site that I frequently use, in which anyone can create be a seller on this site and create listings for their own items. The site provides a payment platform where you pay the site first when you want to buy an item, then the seller ships it out to you, and you click on "Order Received", and the site will release your payment to the seller.

So today I found a listing for a cheap monitor, and so I use the built-in chat function to talk to the seller. Strange the seller cannot be contacted on the site, but left a number on his listing for anyone interested in buying to contact him through Whatsapp. So I did, and he told me the condition of the item, then followed by "do you do online banking or cash deposit?"

At this point, I tried to tell him I prefer to pay through the site, but he keeps trying to convince me he's a trusty guy and gave me his guarantee. The only thing I need to do is transfer him the money, then he will ship out and provide me with the tracking number immediately. Once I didn't reply for 5 minutes, he told me that I can opt to pay half of the amount first, they pay the other half upon order delivery.

So I was pretty skeptical at this point, and so I asked my brother who bought many more stuff online and he told me this is "100% a scam". In hindsight I should've seen that it is a scam since the seller only wants to deal outside of the site, and needs me to pay the full amount first. I guess this is a lesson learnt for me and luckily I didn't decide to pay first then ask questions later.

If anyone's interested the monitor I'm planning to get is the HP OMEN 27. The seller was selling it brand new at ~$289 (after currency conversion), while other listings shows it at ~$480.

Almost certain it is the exact same panel in the nearly $500 HP omen 27

Obviously HP would/should have a better stand and quality control, OSD etc and of course it has the g-sync module attached. A buddy of mine has the omen 27 so we'll compare in person on Wednesday.

So I'll just throw out my two cents on a monitor, it depends on your setup. For RL and twich based FPS games FreeSync and Gsync can be important. FreeSync works with AMD graphics cards and Gsync with Nvidia. The down side of this is Gsync is a hardware chip and makes any monitor with it cost a substantial amount more. Otherwise for a monitor I'd look for the following:

  • 144hz and up refresh rate
  • 5ms and under response time
  • 1440p (2k) resolution

As far as colors go, that's trickier, generally IPS panels look better but it's hard to find one for reasonable price that has a good response time. Here's a Gsync one that's respectable and not crazy expensive: https://www.amazon.com/OMEN-27-HP-Monitor-Aluminum/dp/B0711T4RDF

    Best of luck!

This wouldn't be bad. Has a 72% color gamut, 1440p, 165hz, and G-Sync

I bought it at a pawn shop for $330 because it has one dead pixel.

I got to 3333sr bastion only

Hello, I have a quick question. I just bought this item for my new PC:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0768M95WY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought this monitor to go along with it:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0711T4RDF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My question is, would I be better off returning this monitor and getting a monitor that has 1080p with 240hz 1ms? I am looking for performance, frames, and playing competitive games on ultra quality (e.g., Overwatch, League of Legends, Fortnite). Would sacrificing the QHD 1440p at 165hz (purchased monitor linked above) be better for performance if I got a 1080p 240hz monitor instead?

Thank you.

yeah says right on the box. And here is the amazon listing.

I decided to pick it up this afternoon. Definitely a lot better than my TV, however I am somewhat disappointed by the simplicity of the color/display controls. But for $450 I think it was worth it.

And I did notice that it was quite bright at first. After some tweaking it became less oppressive.

Are you recommending this simply because of the 165Hz refresh rate? Besides that I'm not seeing anything to justify the extra ~$200 over similar models with 144Hz refresh. TBH, I'm not too convinced the extra 20fps is worth $200.

Also, the Amazon listing had it marked as 4ms response.

Monitor you suggested: https://www.amazon.com/PG279Q-2560x1440-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B017EVR2VM

Monitor I'm considering: https://www.amazon.com/OMEN-27-HP-Monitor-Aluminum/dp/B0711T4RDF

Of course. At this point, every major monitor brand makes high refresh rate monitors.

A quick search reveals a 27" 165Hz monitor that probably fits what will show up on OWL stage: https://www.amazon.com/OMEN-HP-27-Monitor-Aluminum/dp/B0711T4RDF

Shit yea. Weird how they don't mention it on the .ca website

You understand that just because your screen isn't in 4K, that doesn't mean your games will suddenly run at 60FPS, right? Its not related.

That said, I think you should go for a monitor. 30-40' TVs are barely worth it and usually have worse input lag and response time.

Games will look a lot better on a good gaming monitor.

Something like this 27' HP Omen Gaming Monitor might be down your alley.
