But why couldn't you simply spend the $15 for a caddy?

Yes, you'll just need to get an optical bay caddy. Here's a cheap one..

So it comes with M.2 slot and it should be an empty HDD bay. But as I said before there is always opportunity to install hard drive bay.

I have an SSD connected to that port on mine in one of these.. It works fine with ESXi. I use it to host my VMs and pass through an H200 in IT mode to FreeNAS.

The CD/DVD drive bay can vary in size a little so you'll have to find out some dimensions; the bracket will convert the (more than likely) SATA and mini-SATA power into SATA and the normal-length SATA power for you can hook in a 2.5" drive.

EDIT: Most likely a matter of finding out which size between 2 dimensions since it seems most are either 9.5mm (.37 inches) or 12.7mm (exactly half an inch), which I believe is the drive thickness (here's a reputable brand/high rated link with both options for sub $15):

As long as the drive in the Acer isn't some crazy proprietary drive it should be possible.

Push comes to shove, pull your optical drive and get a 12.5mm optical drive SSD adapter for $14. That will let you use the ODD SATA/power cable for the SSD without worrying about power splitters.

It's under Technical Details on that page I linked.

HDD: 1 TB 5400rpm SATA
RAM: 4 GB DDR4-2133

Any notebook can be upgraded to use an HDD if you're willing to do it yourself. For this one, you would need to put the SSD in the HDD slot; I don't think it has any slots for M.2 form factor drives. If you look for and buy a HDD caddy, you can place the HDD into that and then replace the DVD drive. These caddies are universal and will go into any notebook's DVD drive slot. You can also take the bezel from your notebook's DVD drive and install it on the caddy so it looks good.
