I find your curiosity wonderful.
From my understanding, Kriya Yoga is considered yoga focused on creating mental action or "kriyas". It is like creating a hurricane of mental power, and it becomes like fire, and burns through levels of thoughts. Paramhamsa Yogananda is famous for having introduced this form of yoga in the United States in the first-half of the 1900s.
I began Kriya Yoga without instruction, on my own, and since I executed the kriyas incorrectly, I began experiencing serious mental consequences, such as very basic psychosis; unsurprisingly, the book warned readers of this, which is why it also strongly advised seeking out a teacher before assuming this form of yoga. I am now a student of someone whom I consider has walked the path much, much further than I.
Here is where I found my teacher. His name is Sri Mukherjee. His spiritual pedigree includes Paramahamsa Yogananda.
Here and here you may read his 2 books written on the practice, only as a general guide and superficial dispelling of some barriers kriyabans (practitioners of Kriya Yoga) face in their practice. Toward the end of the first book - or perhaps it was the second - he mentions very interesting experiences he had related to Kriya Yoga.
Feel free to ask me more questions, although I am limited in my understanding.
