The camera you need to get is the Panasonic G85 with Rode VideoMicro for $799.99. The microphone is basically free, that kit I linked is the same price as just the base camera. Or you can get a kit with SD cards and a case if you prefer that.

As long as you're in the States and not EU, that camera has an unlimited recording time. Panasonic cameras also won't overheat on you.

Other features you should know about:

  • 4K video recording

  • In body image stabilization for handheld shots

  • Interchangeable lenses with the micro four thirds system

  • Weather sealing for outdoor use

I understand you didn't have a great experience with your previous Panasonic camcorder, but this is a much higher end camera, so they're not really comparable.

/u/ChickenMcDerps - with a $1000 budget to get started, I would avoid both DSLRs and camcorders.

A $1000 camcorder will have a relatively small sensor and won't give you much control over depth of field for creative expression - and a $1000 DSLR will lack in-body stabilization and be limited to 1080p resolution (plus, its viewfinder will be blocked by the reflex mirror in video mode).

Instead, for weddings and short films, I recommend an interchangeable lens DSLM (where the "M" stands for mirrorless) such as the [$997.99 4K Panasonic G85 (with a free 64 GB SD card)] (https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Mirrorless-Interchangeable-Camera-Kit/dp/B01MXHN32J//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20).

In addition to high resolution 4K recording, this camera has in-body image stabilization, focus peaking, zebras for exposure control, a built-in intervalometer for time lapse, a 60 fps frame rate at full HD, unlimited continuous recording (no 30 minute limit) and a viewfinder that actually works while you're recording video.

Canon DSLRs in this price range have none of these features straight out of the box.

Here is the image quality the G85 can produce at 4K and 1080p resolution (on YouTube, please watch at 2160p - and on Vimeo at 4K):

I'd go for a G7 or a G85. Do you need to buy a mic etc too, or you already got one? Amazon referral links included

I got the G85(MK) abt... a week after I posted this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MXHN32J/.

The 4k is nice indeed without any memory restriction, just haven't got a big chance to use it yet until November.

Ah,
Well considering they sell for 699$ with the kit lens, memory cards, etc...

I'm not too sure how much more I'm willing to spend. Might just pick up an A6400 instead myself lol
