Try a felt-tip pen, like the Papermate Flair. Or a plastic-tip pen like the Sharpie pen. Ballpoints can sometimes get clogged with paper, especially if you're left-handed.

Thank you for the reference. The rough edges look to be mostly due to smaller short strokes instead of large ones, so a line-confidence problem. What helped me overcome that was learning to not going back over a line to 'fix' it after I made it, mostly by doing lots of 30-sec figure studies, since those force you to be line efficient.

What kind of pen are you using? A thicker one or a brush tip will help, since you won't need to go back over areas. Drawing larger will help too, since little line defects won't be as prominent on a larger page.

These pens are really satisfying to use, and since you color with pencil, you won't need to worry about color bleeding.
