Never be afraid of looking around locally and at online western shops (or stores local to your country). So many lolitas go cookie cutter and assume that if it isn't brand or Japanese then it isn't loliable. Not true at all! I've actually been thinking of starting a Tumblr blog where I share loliable items I find in common stores that aren't Japanese or lolita to help people who might have budget and time constraints.

To me personally, avoiding being an ita is finding the right balance. But the most common suggestions are:

  1. Avoid highly contrasting color combos like black and white, red and white, royal blue, and white.

  2. The more ruffles and lace =/= more lolita.

  3. Modesty! Closer to your knees than your butt, please. No cleavage, and have sleeves.

  4. Wear the proper petticoat and/or underskirt for your dress. MeLikesTea has a nice guide.

  5. Avoid looking like you put your coord together at Hot Topic (but in all honesty, if your look is classic, rococo, aristocratic, or gothic, you MIGHT find some useful items there).

    My personal tips:

  6. You don't have to wear AP or BTSSB. It's so cookie cutter. Yes, they have cute and quality items, but so do other smaller brands...? Taobao =/= Poor quality.

  7. You don't have to wear loud obnoxious bodyline mary jane style shoes. If there's anything I say to go for function over fashion, make it your shoes. Don't want blisters, bruises, and blood!

  8. Invest in a nice bag. Even if you don't carry bags. A bag can help pull any outfit together, be it lolita or not. And often, meetups take place at places like conventions or all day events. You can store water, a snack, a tide pen, and maybe something like emergency flats in your bag.
