The character of Gary King, (played by Simon Pegg,) with his dyed black hair, long black trench coat and Sisters of Mercy t-shirt, is an aging Goth. The necklace he is wearing is the “Eye of Ra” or “Udjat”, and was a popular symbol of the peoples of ancient Egypt. Legend says that when the eye faces the right, it represents the sun god, “Ra”; when the eye faces the left, it represents the moon god,”Aah”. Depending on which way it's facing it allows the wearer to invoke the blessings of either god while still possessing the magic of both. Along with other mystical symbols it is often times seen among those who follow dark culture.
