I'm a professional musician, but still I took a year off for similar reasons. A guitarist who burned out and came back to it later in life wrote an insightful book about the process that I read when I recovered, Practicing: A Musician's Return to Music

There is a really good book out there called "Practising" http://www.amazon.com/Practicing-Musicians-Return-Music-Vintage/dp/0307278751
it follows the story of a classical guitarist who was really dedicated, went to school, started his solo career then just... stopped. Much later in life he comes back to and talks about his experiences trying to re-learn it. It is a really good book and you should read it.

Anyways, my advice would be to start with music that you worked on when you were middle/high school. You would be surprised how many memories will come flooding back.

I also recommend reading Practicing: A Musician's Return to Music by Glenn Kurtz, it's all about the author's life as a disillusioned professional guitarist who gives up on music only to return to it later in life for his own enjoyment. Essential reading, especially if you ever think about quitting.

Congratz man on getting in! As a hobbyist I can't imagine what kind of things you are going through, but I read this amazing book that really helped me with practicing and it also turns out to be quite a good read. If you are looking for guidance, I would seriously urge you to read this book. He went through what you are dealing with now.
