Benefits of hanging them by the feet:

The feet are the strongest part of the wader and puts the least amount of stress on seams and stitches.
After cleaning, all water will drain out and off of the wader. Nothing will collect in the boots. Dry waders resist mold and mildew.
Dust, debris, mold spores (see previous point) will not collect inside of the waders.
Spiders that would have hidden deep inside of an upright boot, will instead build their web near the opening. Thus, they are easier to remove.
