This is my parts list from Amazon, I just googled Retro Pi installation guide and used one of the top results;

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3

Samsung 32GB EVO (storage is entirely based on your budget and how much space you think you will need)

Raspberry Pi Case (lots of options)

Wired Controller (lots of options)

Card Reader (If your PC doesn't have one already)

Add in an HDMI cable if you don't have an extra laying around.

Yeah! the case is a pretty cool one huh. It's this one in case anyone is wondering.

I first sanded down the black gloss with some fine sand paper on all sides except the bottom until the whole thing was a dull, flat black.
Then I painted both halves with a dark gray primer.
I then painted the top half with white since I didn't actually have a lighter gray, but it still looked pretty nice when all said and done.
Then I took a grate from the bottom of a Sega Genesis (I know right?) and taped the top piece of the case to the grate and used it as a template for the venting, painting the black strips all the way down the top.
I then masked off the middle area of the strips and down the sides of the now-black strips, leaving the 2 end points open and filled those in with black.
I matched up the bottom with the top and masked off the black strip for each side on the bottom of the case as well and simply painted those black.

Then I painted the whole thing over in a couple coats of gloss and finished it off with a chrome machine cut sticker from here. Glad you like it!

Well the other day Rasberry Pi 3 Model B was $28 w/ free Shipping so:

Raspberry Pi- $28

32GB SD card- $13

2.5A Power Supply- $10

Heatsinks- $5

Case- $8

HDMI Cable- $7

_____

Total- $ 71

I'd say it's an okay deal. I'd rather buy it bundled anyway, just so it all arrives at once.

I use this case from Amazon. It is in three pieces with the top being easily removable allowing for way access to the GPIO pins when needed and protects them when not in use. As far as heart sinks, just about any ones you can find should work unless you are looking to overclock or something along those lines.

I use a plastic case that came with it. It may be the default case? The board is mostly covered by plastic so maybe that's why I'm having issues.

As far as controllers go, I've tried about 6 and ps3 has been the worse for lag so far.

Edit: my case https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-Case-Black-fits/dp/B00UW2G1BS/ref=pd_sim_147_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FNZCMFM8RRX4XTRPPR3Y

This case:

With this fan: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014KKY5K6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I hot-glued the fan onto the lid/top-piece, but in order to do that I had to dremel out a few molded on plastic pieces, but none of it compromised and structural integrity. Fan plugs right into the pi, and it does a really good job at keeping it cool, but it's pretty damn loud.

Hope this helps.

This is the same case I had for my pi2. I've tested with the lid on and off, no real difference. There is no heat near the pi3.

Would taking the thermal tape off the heat sink and applying some of my x86 thermal paste help? Is that stuff adhesive at all?

I for one am quite happy with the black case from OneNineDesign.

This case was $5.97 a few days ago. I went to order another one for my Pi-Hole and the price went up $2.
