Personally I'd steer well clear of Apple. They're kinda overpriced and rather anti-consumer (Exhibit 1, Exhibit 2, Exhibit 3).

  • For reference: The MBP 13 inch base model has a Core i5 8259U (4 cores, 2.3GHz), 8GB DDR3, Intel Iris 655 (integrated GPU. No discrete graphics card), a 256GB SSD, and 4 Thunderbolt 3 (Type C) ports. That costs $1800. Reference

Some things I came up with off the top of my head:

  • Razer Blade 15: Core i7 8750H (6 cores, 2.2GHz), 16GB DDR4, GTX 1060 Max-Q (significantly better for games and rendering (CUDA acceleration) than an Intel integrated GPU), 256GB SSD plus a 2TB HDD, 3 USB-A 3.1 (traditional USB ports), Ethernet port, 1 Thunderbolt 3 (Type C) port, HDMI and Mini DisplayPort. That also costs $1800. Reference

  • MSI G65 Stealth Thin: Very similar to the Razer Blade 15. Same CPU, same GPU, same RAM, 256GB SSD (albeit no HDD this time), even basically the same I/O. However, this one has a 144Hz panel. Also $1800. Reference

  • ASUS GL503-DH74: i7-7700HQ (slightly older, 4 cores, but still holds up nicely), 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD + 1TB HDD, full desktop GTX 1070, 144Hz display but with Nvidia GSync this time. GSync is variable refresh rate for your display. If your games can't hit 144FPS consistently, then the display scales the refresh rate with the FPS to eliminate the stuttery feeling. $1900. Reference

  • Acer Predator Helios 300: Bit on the chunky side, but incredible value. i7 7700HQ, 16GB DDR4, GTX 1060 (full desktop, not Max-Q), 256GB SSD + room for HDD to be added later, unfortunately no 144Hz or GSync. But wait... It's $1050. Reference

All of these laptops will 100% perform better than a MacBook Pro in almost all situations. The better CPUs will have an advantage for video rendering. Their GPUs blow the Intel Iris iGPU out of the water. Sure, they might be overkill for what you want to do, but they're the same price (or less) than a MacBook with inferior specs.

Hey, it's your money. If MacOS is a huge selling point for you, then get a MacBook. But for the applications you mentioned, a MacBook doesn't seem like the best option.

If you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

I use the Dell XPS 15 maxed out with the 4K screen and it chews through editing tasks, and using proxies it's absolutely rapid. Don't know what your budget is, but they have a few models, they all do the job while looking good and are built well. I've also heard good things about the razer blade but the build quality of the dell and the excellent screen are what sold me

Have the same problem :< Although I'm thinking of buying 2018 version, as RTX for me doesn't make the cut right now. So I'm thinking about this model for $1700 + $430 (tax/shipping) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HPSR3Z9?ref=emc_p_m_5_i. One question I have - does anybody know if buying from Amazon to Poland laptop comes with the right power plug (EU standard)?

What about a Razer Blade 15? I’ve heard it’s a pretty decent Linux machine.

I’m actually debating over this and a XPS 13 myself since spec wise the Razer seems to be a good value while not being overly big.

At the mentioned budget, you have almost every option available.

Dell XPS 15

Explicitly NOT a gaming laptop but with the specs of one. Is 0.66 inches thin, weighing in at 2.0kgs. Best screen in terms of brightness, crisp images and colour reproduction. Also, the best in terms of customer support. Produces the least heat of the three.

Razer Blade 15

Happy Diwali all year round. 0.66 inches thin, looks and feels like a Macbook Pro. Is a gaming beast inside. Gets hot, but thermal management is at it's best. But the fans won't be always silent. Imagine a Macbook Pro but which can game as well as the other things Apple is the best at.

Gigabyte Aero 15

Priciest and the bulkiest of the bunch at 0.8 inches thick (albeit the same weight as the XPS). The 144Hz screen is going to be a blessing for a MOBA like HotS. Despite being heavily gamer oriented, has ultrabook level battery life.

Here are a couple options I have noticed. I didn't do much in-depth research, these are just two that stood out to me for whatever reason:

Razer Blade 2018: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HPSR3Z9/ref=psdc_13896615011_t1_B07D8YBNSS?th=1

Acer Predator Helios 300 2019:https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-9750H-Keyboard-PH315-52-78VL/dp/B07QXLFLXT/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3KKUTPAUSDDM7&keywords=helios+300+2019&qid=1568771802&s=electronics&sprefix=helios+300%2Celectronics%2C221&sr=1-3

I think between the two, I prefer the Razer since it has a simpler design and it's a bit more portable. But I'm worried that being a year old is too much of a compromise. As for the Acer Helios, I've heard it's currently the best bang-for-buck, but my biggest concern is that there are reports of driver-related problems that make it unusable...I feel like spending a little more money for something more reliable is worth it.

Are there any other brands/ models that are better than those two?

And to clarify on what you mean by "low-powered processors," do you mean Ultraportable laptops like the MacBooks, Surfaces of Dell XPS? I wasn't planning on getting one of those anyway.

I'm 19 and currently in college. I'm majoring in Visual Communication Tech and have been wanting to purchase a really good laptop for some time now. I never had a computer and can't really have one because there just isn't any space where I live (It's also expensive). The only things regarding technology that I own is my cheap smartphone and an old samsung chromebook given to me by my highschool back in the 9th grade (Age 14). I want to purchase a laptop that's from $1,000 to $1,800 and that can handle some mild gaming but can also edit videos and do some graphic design and/or artwork. I have the cash, but am really hesitant on buying it because I've heard of good and bad experiences. So for those who have purchased the Razer Blade 15 or a similar product, what was your experience and would this laptop be just right for me? It's the only good one I've found on Amazon, but it looks to good to be true.
