Hey there! I love wearing bold colors, but I agree with you that sometimes they don't match my skin tone. I usually cover up the top over with a lip creme that works well with my skin tone. Here's what I do:

  1. Apply lip primer before you start. Here's one that I love using--I usually don't like using lip liners for some reason. Either they're too hard (sharp?) or they don't work very well.

  2. Use a flat round-tipped brush like this one to apply your lipstick. I have all my lipsticks repotted into flat metal pans but you can also just pick up the lipstick from its original stick container with the brush and apply it onto your lips that way. I usually start with a bright color (like magenta) and then blend it with a muted color (like mauve/brown) to add dimension to my lips. I cover my entire lips thinly for every layer.

  3. If you're not happy with the color, add a different color to change the tone. Sometimes I do 2-3 layers of lipstick (very thin layers) and then cover with a matte lip cream. My favorite one is Meet Matte Hughes in Committed. I also use my lip brush to apply the cream/liquid lipstick.

  4. This step is very important if you want the refined look: Take your liquid foundation, squirt a very small amount onto your palm or finger. Then take your beauty blender or small brush and dip the pointy end into it. Use this on just the outside of your lips to cover up any mistakes. This creates a sharper edge between your lip color and your face. You can smooth out the foundation by going away from your lips. Be careful not to go overboard at this step or you'll make your lipstick look smaller than your lips. If that happens you can just use the lip brush to fix it.

  5. To set your lipstick, you can cover your lips with a tissue and brush on face powder with a big, fluffy brush to blend it better with your face. Usually if I wear the Meet Matte Hughes brand, I don't have to do this step because it "finishes" the look already.

    Hope this helps. Have fun!
