But what about carry-on restrictions? They are typically more restrictive than check in luggage. Just so we're clear. Oversized luggage get's put in the bottom of the plane with all the other suitcases . Your monitor box will not protect it from the rough handling checked luggage will experience. It will most likely be damaged and the airline is not liable. The only way IMHO to safely transport a monitor is by taking it onto the plane when you board and sticking it in the overhead bin as carry on luggage. In my experience, carry on luggage has more restrictive size constraints than for checked luggage so you maybe out of luck in transporting it in the box. An alternative would be to use something smaller, like a monitor carry bag for LAN parties, like this. It should allow you to carry it on the plane. You'll have to make sure no one puts a heavy bag on top of it in the overhead compartment.
