Checking doneness of things. I have a coworker who prefers using one to a meat fork to check steak temps. I currently use mine to check beets and potatoes for doneness, and checking that bone marrow is hot during service. I really hate those cheap blue plastic-ended ones though, they're so flimsy. I have one of these and they're so sturdy.
