I would personally not recommend acrylics. Even before I came out as trans I decided to get acrylics because it was easier than natural nail maintenance for guitar (which is what I went to school for).

I used acrylics for about a year or so, and they really destroyed my natural nail underneath; even when I went to a pretty expensive and well known spot for nails. If you value the health of your natty nails, it isn't worth it. Mine are better now but took about 4 months to heal.

What I WOULD recommend otherwise is the following:

I take VERY good care of my nails now, and this stuff has done wonders for them. It is very cheap and lasts for a long time. I put it on once a day, and have only broken one nail since mine healed up from the acrylics (my car door has always been out for them).

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Also, just in case you still want to get the acrylics I figured I would answer your other questions since I have spent so long in nail salons at this point.

To look for one, make fucking sure you read reviews. Some places are NOT up to health code and are even worse for your nails (some can lead to infection). You want to make sure that they are using the highest quality products. Make sure that they have a clean and comfortable environment. It is pretty apparent going inside whether a place is good, great, or terrible just by how they organize and maintain the store.

The process is pretty simple. Sometimes it can hurt if they aren't very good. The process differs place to place based on what they use, but generally for acrylics they will file down the top of your nail, make the acrylics by combining stuff that I don't know what it is, and pop it on your nail. They ask about shape and length, and then file it for you. As a warning, the day after I first got acrylics it hurt VERY fucking badly. I could barely use my fingers; but it went away within the day and never happened again. I imagine my nails were just pulling up a little bit on my fingers.

It doesn't take long, maybe like 30 - 40 minutes at the most?

I never really got colors, but I am almost certain they could apply it for you if you asked (I would probably tip more because I am self-conscious about stuff like that).

As far as etiquette goes, I would just leave a solid tip and thank them. It is very akin to getting your hair done in that way. Some of them will talk if you want (Many of them at cheaper places don't talk ever though), and if they sense you just want to chill will only ask you direct questions about what you want done. My hands always shook when I did it and they made fun of me a lot hahaha. We got along really well because I went there ~every 2 weeks to a month.

Hope this helps too!
