A common misconception about Nintendo, by both gamers and non-gamers alike, is that Nintendo's happy family-friendly persona means the games are meant for kids. They're meant for everyone.

No one is too old for Mario -- Nintendo are geniuses at level design and the Mario games are fantastic. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros, Persona Q, Monster Hunter (best played with a Circle Pad Pro) -- all fantastic games.

You could also get him a large SD card. I got this one from Amazon. It's massive and relatively cheap. Excellent for downloaded games.

I would also suggest getting him a case of some kind. I have a case from Waterfield Designs for my PS Vita that I adore, and they make the same cases fit for a 3DS here. They go for $12 for a suede sleeve, to $45 and $49 for the cases. I have the CitySlicker and it's fantastic. Quality materials, soft interior, a zip pouch on the back good for earbuds and games, and three slots under the front pouch for other games. They also boast an excellent support staff to boot.

1-- Yes. Went to Japan for an entire month to photograph everything from the people to the aftermath. Buy a really nice point and shoot to carry around. I always recommend the Lumix series. L internals and panasonic outside. Best bang for your buck. After a few days of 'scouting' find out what you really want to spend some time photographing with your nicer gear. If you have 5 months that is plenty of time to plan. Think of it this way, when you are home and photographing you usually don't just go to a place with your DSLR and capture 'the moments,' instead after multiple trips of knowing exactly what you want and how you will get it the pictures get better and better. Lumix for scouting and D7000 for execution. If there is a day that you don't know if you will be able to revisit bring the D7000.

Also I missed out on a lot of good experiences in Japan because I had about 15 pounds of crap with me 24x7 because I didn't want to 'miss' anything. After awhile I was tired of carrying a minimum of 15 pounds. By the end of the day it felt like 20-25 (especially if I bought gifts.) I didn't even want to photograph stuff later in the day.

2-- Don't shoot raw. I shoot raw at home for weddings etc. On trips I bring 8 cards ranging from 16-32 gigs in a pelican card carrier. I think if memory serves the D7000 shoots about 2,000 jpeg photos on a 16 gig card. So 5 months, lets do a little math. I say what, 200 pictures a day on average? Comes out to about 16 16 gig cards. So break that down, get 8 32 gig cards and you will be covered.

Link to cards I use - These cards are a great in between value. I have class 10 'speed' cards for shooting raw non stop. I rarely shoot raw that fast. Rarely as in I forget what card is in my camera 90% of the time because it never fills the buffer. Also you know it will be fast enough for video. Not to mention I have had like 10 of these cards and they are solid as a rock.

This case, just buy it... - This case will float down the river ahead of you while you are about to die in the rapids singing, 'I will survive.'

Remember your experience as a person should overlap the idea of missing a great photo.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

*On a side note about raw vs. jpeg, I have seen more tests and shot over 150k shots myself on the D7000 switching between raw (convert to dng) and jpeg best quality 14 bit. I never see any differences outside of shots that I f- up and need to fix badly. That doesn't mean I can even fix them, just that they are salvageable. Why I shoot raw for weddings. There is never a time when I can't get a good exposure on travel though. Maybe a stop or two off, but that alone doesn't justify shooting raw. I have to (once in a while) save some shot that is taken after I switch rooms 5 times in a row and don't have time to adjust my settings. Bam, it's THE shot and they want it. I can make it look 'decent' with raw. Jpeg not so much.

Mountain Lion has resume built-in. Just shut down as normal. You should see a "Reopen windows' dialog box pop up. As long as that's checked, it should reboot with what you were doing.

I'd also recommend replacing that USB key with a SDHC or SDXC card. You could then keep that permanently in your Air (it'll stick out a bit, but far less than a usb key). A 32gb or 64gb Class 10 card is fairly cheap.

I am using a 16GB HP-branded SDHC card in my 3DS. I bought it over a year ago, and only paid $16 for it. it is only rated as class 4, but I've had no trouble with it, and I've been using it in my 3DS for that entire time.

If money is not a concern, I'd go with a SanDisk. Here is a 32GB SanDisk Extreme SDHC card for $35 delivered. The seller is Amazon, so you can be pretty sure it will be genuine (make sure to choose the frustration-free packaging option to get the one sold by Amazon).
