Get a pair of bookshelf speakers and a powered subwoofer.

Should be more than enough to get you started, assuming you have a receiver already. I have just the bookshelf speakers, and while I find the bass perfect for rock, I'd recommend the powered subwoofer for house.
I picked up these Sanus 30" stands for my Elac B6's and I'm pretty happy with them.

Hrm.. that is a tough room. I can see the wifely influence with all the "decor" additions so I will try to work around that.
Any chance of setting up two "absolutely lovely wooden speaker stands" like this in front of the alcove walls? Putting a set of speakers in there with the TV is going to sound weird. Just like when you put your head in a bucket.
If the stands aren't applicable I'd recommend a set of the Micca center's to go inside there to the left and right. They are the narrowest speakers I use. Since you already have the Micca bookshelves on the way those will do but you could consider moving them back when you move onto a true surround sound and getting the MB42X-C's for that space.
