If you dont mind being closed source driver, get nvidia. Their closed source blob is currently far and away the best. If you are wanting to do an open source dirver as soon as possible, go AMD. Their devs are actually putting effort into open source, and will likely reach a fully functional open source driver far sooner than nvidia will.
250$ budget for each:

AMD: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00FLMKREQ/
(BTW, with the smile thingy on amazon, you can set it up so that .5% of your purchase goes to FSF. Pretty dinky sum but it all adds up)

Deal is gone for now. Might not come back
They are usually around $290-$340, I got mine from on Amazon from a Prime seller, I hate waiting for stuff and I know I can trust Amazon Prime. Price isn't bad at $319 now: http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11217-02-40G/dp/B00FLMKREQ/
IMO these cards are the best overall GPUs available right now, best mix of hashrate, watts, availability, and most importantly to me, cooling ability. I'm running all of mine on the ASrock H81 BTC boards, works great with 6 GPUs and a 1000W PSU.
