My set up is the nightmare of a mad man. It started with a Mac mini and the idea that Plex would be a great way to just watch some downloaded stuff via my Apple TV. So, I added an external HDD, and slowly decided that I might want to keep some of the stuff we've already watched. So I added another pair of HDDs. Then I figured I'd get rid of all of my DVDs and Blu-Rays, so I added more and more HDDs and added USB hubs along the way. I think I have 17 external HDD drives (mostly 8TB, and a couple of 10TB).
It's all in a big server cabinet in our theater:

I now have a rack mountable USB hub with 13 ports:

I also have silent fans blowing on the HDDs to keep them cool.
Just today I decided to break things up. I'm keeping my internal SSD (it's backup HDD) and Mac mini along with the 8 live drives in the theater server cabinet. My backup drives I'm going to keep in my office. I'll have them attached to another Mac that I can use as an entire backup Plex server
With this new rack mounted hub, and moving my backups out of the cabinet, I now have a lot more room to grow. Funny enough, I'm now only using 1 of the 4 USB ports on the Mac.
