It was reading a chapter in Shock Value about Night of the Living Dead that made me think about it.
Movie Tropes
I'm halfway through Shock Value by Jason Zinoman. It's about the sort of "new wave" of horror movies in the 1970's - primarily focusing on the directors - Craven, Carpenter, Polanski, Romero, etc.
It's been a pretty fun read so far. Some good little background stories on the making of some iconic movies.
I really enjoyed The Monster Show by David J. Skal and Shock Value by Jason Zinoman. I've also heard good things about:
Men, Women, And Chainsaws by Carol J. Clover
Post 9/11 Horror in American Cinema by Kevin J. Wetmore Jr.
Nightmares in Red, White and Blue by Joseph Maddrey
