For general classwork, however, it depends largely on who your students are and what they need. If they can afford Kaplan, then it might be safe to say that they're beyond the "Hello, how are you" stage of English acquisition.
Your students here might want to be grounded in text, so I'd suggest having some sort of text every day. They can be super short tests. One fortune cookie might be the foundation for each lesson. This book is a good start: http://www.amazon.com/Short-Sweet-Texts-How-Them/dp/0140813837
Having some sort of text, be it a fortune, a quote, an epitaph, or even moving up to a haiku or something, provides a grounding for each lesson that I find older students respect.
Example: "Chicken Little only has to be right once."
This little quote packs a huge punch. First, cultural relevance. Do they know the story of chicken little. Bang, story time. Compare / contrast to boy who cried wolf
Homonyms: right.
Vocab: once, twice
Speaking prompt: Is it better to be overly careful or overly trusting?
