Shure all the way if you like IEMs

I have a pair of SC4's and they are amazing if you have the money to spend. I used to have SC2's but I upgraded about a year ago. Amazing, amazing headphones.

I had exactly three wow moments with headphones.

  • Sony MDR-J10 to Shure SE110. My first thought was "this can't be real". This purchase got me started on the road to spending far too much money on audio gear.
  • Sony MDR-V600 to Sennheiser HD595. It was mostly the clarity that did it. The V600's bass bled well into the midrange, and was very muddy to boot.
  • Sennheiser HD595 to AKG Q701. The massive increase in soundstage actually made me a bit dizzy for a minute. I wasn't expecting such a huge difference between the two pairs.

While I've had other upgrades in the past, the sheer difference in the sound is what made me say wow. Going from the SE110 to the SE215 and then to the Triple Fi 10's didn't have anywhere near the effect on me as the above three examples. Same goes for when I recieved my dac and amp.

I have no experience with noise canceling headphones, but when I used to ride BART, I picked up a set of sound isolating, in-canal ear buds and love them. I have the Shure SE110, which they do not appear to make anymore, so this link is way overpriced. When I bought them they were $100. I believe the SE215s would be the current equivalent.

If you aren't used to that style, they take some getting used to, but once you get accustomed to getting them fit right in there, the sound is fantastic. You just need to make sure they're all the way in, or the bass will be non-existent. I knew I loved them when I was standing on the BART platform, just behind the yellow line, listening at half volume while looking down at my MP3 player, and the train managed to sneak up on me as it pulled into the station. They also blocked out the transbay howl pretty well. I used them for music and playing games on my PSP. I credit them for keeping me sane for those two years...

i have these: shure se110. $50 on amazon now, which is cheaper than they were when i got them. they're the kind that stick in your ear like an ear plug, so they're great if you want to block out noise without blasting your music absurdly loud. i commute by bus, so they're great for me.
