Two other things.

  1. Look for some sort of autism support group in your area. I don't know where you live, but check out the Autism Society.
  2. Functional sign language will help beyond picture communication and make things easier. Things like yes, no, more, please, thank you, eat, drink, thirsty, hungry, want, etc. The Signing Time DVDs I watch them with my students. I buy them off of eBay, because they are cheaper there. Make sure school staff know that you are working on functional sign language. When he is learning sign, pair the verbal with the sign. Having him learn formal ASL, is really complicated for autistic kiddos, but functional sign is really helpful. Plus, if you're out in the community, you don't have to carry around a bunch of pictures.
