That's because you have a bose surround system. Bose is the beats audio of home theater systems.

-edit for those asking what I would recommend,I can't really give you an answer, each person's budget and room space will change the requirements. But shorthand- bose overcharges for the level of quality they provide. A couple of big problems with bose is they use poor components in their speakers, and only have tweeters in those little cubes. At a minimum, you need to have tweeters and full-range drivers in your satellite speakers as well as a dedicated sub.

Bose's "acoustimass" system pushes almost all midrange audio to the "subwoofer" which produces muddy audio, and places the audio in the wrong place in the soundscape (basically for notes that are significantly low enough your ears can't locate the position, so the placement of a true sub is essentially irrelevant. With the midrange frequencies in a bose system being pushed to the acoustimass "sub" voices and other sounds don't sound like they are coming from the screen, but from whatever corner you have placed that unit).

This may or may not help, but this is the system I have, which I found on Craigslist for $300 (which was my personal budget). http://www.amazon.com/SLS-Q-Line-Surround-Theater-System/dp/B000JZSYZO

This is an older system, but the speakers are absolutely great for the price. SLS is a pro-audio company that dabbled in consumer audio with Best Buy and made this system several years ago.

It's what I'd reccomend: http://www.amazon.com/SLS-Q-Line-Surround-Theater-System/dp/B000JZSYZO
