My cat absolutely hates car rides, spends the entire 15-30 minutes whining, crying, and trying to dig his way out of any plastic crate. I recently picked up a rolling mesh carrier from Amazon, and both the cat and I love it. I first set the new carrier up in "bed" mode in the house, with one of his favorite towels, so he he could get used to it. He didn't really go in it except when bribed with treats, however on moving day when I dropped him in and hauled it down to the car, he was perfectly calm and content. I laid the carrier flat on the front seat so he could keep laying down, and it was the longest and most uneventful car ride I've ever taken him on. He just laid in the carrier and watched the scenery go by, and had a perfect vantage point to watch the very interesting windshield wiper movement as it rained off an on.

My biggest concern with the mesh was that he would tear through it trying to dig himself out, but I think having him a little acclimated to it before hand made it more of a "cozy bed" rather than "traumatic travel trap" so he was pretty calm. The carrier was kind of stupid expensive, but for transporting a large, travel-averse cat it really made a difference so it was worth it.
