I would recommend doing something I didn't. Read a book. A good place to start is David Boye's book, Step by Step Knife Making. Figure out what you're getting into before you start. Making a knife is a laborious process that requires a lot of patience and forethought. I am by no means an expert on the subject. I'd hesitate to say that I was even a novice. What I've made there is pretty terrible, and I hang onto them mostly for sentimental reasons, not because they have any value as a tool.
