/u/omaca and /u/AgtCooper have already suggested some great Civil War era books, and I'd like to add James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom to the list. Long considered the greatest single-volume work on the war, McPherson really digs into the root causes, and shows just how far some Southerners were willing to go to spread slavery (to the point of trying to invade, conquer, and annex Cuba as a new slave state).
I'd also highly recommend Stonewall of the West, about Confederate General Patrick Cleburne. An Anglo-Irish immigrant to Arkansas, Cleburne may well have been one of the greatest tactical geniuses of the war, and was easily the finest division commander in the CSA's Army of Tennessee. But his career was stifled when he proposed that the Confederates should free the slaves in exchange for their military service. The proposal met with outright hostility from Jefferson Davis, and Cleburne eventually died fighting on the front lines at Franklin. A fascinating book about one of the few truly heroic characters in the war.
