It's limited by being PCIe 2.0, if you want the full speed then you'll need a bifurcation card in one of the x16 slots with a PCIe 3.0 switch (and one which supports non-bifurcation motherboards).

The I/O CREST SI-PEX40129 Dual M.2 NVMe is just such card and happens to be the cheapest of the three that work on the CMPs.

Otherwise /u/aclarubicin is right it maxes out at 1500. My advice is unless you want to shell out for the switch card buy one of the fast/cheaper larger M2 blades like the Crucial CT1000P1SSD8, it's just as fast in a Mac as the 970 but you get 1TB for the same price as a 500Gb 970.

FYI: The 970 PLUS model will not work in Macs at time of writing.

Would you still get the max speeds of the NVMe drives? I'm slightly suspicious as to how cheap this is compared to this one that was recommended to me
