On that topic, I have a couple of these adapters, both ends are metal and the cable is braided, nice little adapters.
There's also smaller variants if preferred, these ones seem to be rated well on Amazon.

Only downside to both of these devices is that you can't charge your phone and use it at the same time. So if I fall asleep with my USB headset plugged into my phone, it will kill the battery. Android properly recognizes and lets me use a USB audio device, however it tries to "charge" the device and constantly pushes power to it, eventually depleting the battery.

If you wanted to be able to charge your device while using USB devices, this looks like it can get the job done.

Has anyone tried using something like this with their switch? USB C Hub, 4-in-1 USB C to USB Adapter with Type-C Charging

I just got the Switch and I really love it. However I mostly play in tabletop mode due to a lack of a real good space to set up the dock as well as I enjoy playing games with headphones in, so I use the headphone port on the top of the switch.

I just picked up a wired horipad and I'm really liking the standard control feel that it brings, separate from just having the joycons in the grip. However, since I play mostly tabletop, I can only use the wired controller up until I need to start charging the switch. So I was wondering if something like this would work, and allow me to use the controller and still charge the switch. As soon as I found this though and looked up if it would work, I found out about all the risks of using 3rd party docks and dock replacements. I don't want a full dock replacement, I just want something akin to the Hori USB Hub stand. This is a bit cheaper though so I figured I'd try and see if anyone has any experiences to share.

I just posted a diagram as a comment and used a picture of this one which appears to have the capability to charge with the USB-C port (it has 1 USB-C port and 3 USB-A ports) if I'm reading the title correctly (4-in-1 USB C to USB Adapter with Type-C Charging, Thunderbolt 3 Multiport Adapter).

I did rotate and remove most of the cable for the purpose of the diagram but hopefully it gets the idea across.

Edit: the description also mentions that the USB-C port is for charging only (which is fine since I don't need it for data)

That is what the hub does, but please for the love of God don't use that hub.

Not only will it use really cheap components not built for sound quality at all, but it has a ton of other connections with exposed contacts which can introduce noise.

This MIGHT be better, but I'd say something by Apple or really just something that's not $20 would be better.

Honestly by doing this you're going to have so much stuff introducing so much interference it's almost certainly going to sound way worse than just a $50 head unit
