If he doesn't already have experience with shaving with a straight edge, you should go with a double-edge/saftey razor. They require far less upkeep and are easier to learn to use. The general recommendation is something like a Merkur razor.

If you're thinking of going with a badger brush and shave cream, you'll want to get him a nice brush. That will probably be the bulk of what you spend. I personally have a Saville Row brush from QED that I love but I'm sure others can chime in with their favorites.

As for hypo-allergenic shave cream, there's always Prorasso for sensitive skin. Although I don't have exema, I have sensitive skin and my absolute favorite cream is Taylor of Old Bonds Street Avocado. Contrary to the name, it doesn't smell like avocado, but something else incredible.

Lastly, I'm a big proponent of non-alcohol Witchhazel. I have my mom and my gf addicted to this stuff. It's a natural toner and antibacterial. It works great and and doesn't smell like much of anything. It's good enough that I barely use aftershave anymore. Though Nivea sensitive balm is widely accepted as a good aftershave balm.

That's about what I've been using for the last half-decade. The very last bit is razor blades. There are a number of manufacturers from Merkur, to Derby to Feather. Best bet is to buy him a trial pack (5 blades from a number of manufacterers) from a shaving site online and let him figure out his favorite.

butt hair gone with HRT for me. i guess it's unusual, but its nice. generally, keeping a good post-shave routine is important. like, using aloe or witch hazel can significantly reduce issues with bumps and irritation. i use Thayer's. also good for post-electrolysis.

I apologize for leaving out a product list! Here is what I have been using.

Night
Wash-Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Cleanser-I was on the look out for something that would not give me that "squeaky", over-tight, clean feeling and bought this on a whim. I really like it.

Toner-Thayers Witch Hazel in Original- It is alcohol free and I feel helps with inflammation and redness.

BHA-Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Exfoliating Gel- I use this every night except for when I use my AHA twice a week.

Moisturizer-RESIST Anti-Aging Clear Skin Hydrator- Very light weight, I really enjoy this stuff.

AHA-RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment 10% AHA- I added this stuff in only a week or so ago and it has made a HUGE difference. I use it once or twice a week and my face feels so smooth. Love it!

Day
Either wash with water or use Thayer's Witch Hazel again.

Moisturizer-RESIST Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense with SPF 30-This stuff comes out in tannish color, but I am actually not sure if it is intended to be a tinted moisturizer or not. I feel as though it calms my face down and reduces redness, though.

I hope that all makes sense. I'm still new to all of this but this routine has made a big difference for me in such a small amount of time. I expect to break out again, as I think it would be foolish for me to believe that I will never have a zit again, but having one or two every now and then is WAY better than having my cheeks and chin covered in painful acne.

If you like /u/Sirefly's suggestion, you may also find you get some calming relief from a witch hazel product with aloe vera as well. Thayer's makes lots of scents.

It burned the most where I am more normal/somewhat dry like on my cheeks, but it felt like it radiated through my whole face (and my cheeks still vaguely burn now in the morning which scares me). I think I will definitely try something like witch hazel before going back to that.

Which products containing witch hazel would you reccomend? I was looking around and found this at Walgreen's. I was wondering if I should try something more diluted first so my skin can become used to it? Or dilute it myself (how would I do that)? Learning still!!

Edit: I also found this alcohol-free Thayer one but I would wish for something fragrance-free and no rosewater. It seems weird that they have original then an unscented kind?

Maybe use some aloe vera at night as a face mask for a few hours when you're home just hanging out and wash it off before bed/the next morning (because if I remember correctly aloe vera peels on the skin after some time). Or, look into tea tree oil treatments. Some people will just buy a bottle of tea tree oil and dilute it with some water and wipe their face with a cotton pad. Vitamin C serums are also great. I also suggest this Thayer's product.
I recently ordered their rose scented one and I love it.

I used to have moderate rosacea that made me very self conscious, deep red and well defined patches on my cheeks and a rudolf nose. I've been using two aloe products for a few years that have brought them to a faint pink at their worst.

The first is an aloe witch hazel toner (Thayers) that I apply after washing my face, the second an aloe cream (body shop) I apply at night since it's a little shiny. Would strongly recommend.
