The Inventor's Bible

It will give you info on how to get an idea of what the value might be, the licensing process in general, how royalties work, etc.

Getting royalties is ideal if you really think this is something that will sell well long term, but you are relying on the company to make it and market it well.

As an industrial designer your career will benefit from getting the thing made and being able to say that it sold in great numbers. You want to get a fair deal but you don't want to appear unreasonable and scare them away. This is where educating yourself comes in.

I saw a fellow industrial design student back in the day get too picky and loose a deal with a great brand.

So it's about educating yourself and trying to come up with a fair deal for all involved.

FYI, you have publicly disclosed the item so you have a limited amount of time to patent it. I think it is 1 year from first public disclosure.

Patenting, licensing and letting them pay for the patent, or selling are all options that can make sense in different situations. They all have pros and cons.
